Tandoor Construction: Chamber, Insulation and Enclosure

Firebricks for a suitably designed oven chamber

The vertical tandoor chamber requires a consistent layer arrangement and convenient top access. The heavy working wall, insulation, and external casing perform different functions. Before purchasing bricks, determine the method of use, the opening dimensions, and the base solution.

Start with the chamber function

Draw a cross-section with space for fuel, air supply, and residue removal. Check how dishes will be placed in and taken out. The working surface material must match actual food contact; heat resistance is not the only requirement.

Vitcas firebricks can be considered for the lining of the hot part. Their shape affects the geometry of the vertical chamber and cuts. Do not assume that a set of simple bricks automatically creates a finished profile without assessing the joints.

Separate the working mass from the insulation

The chamber layer heats up and can store heat, whereas the insulation limits its flow to the casing. Bio-soluble blanket has applications in suitable high-temperature systems if the selected variant fits the design. Its placement and retention should be described before closing the walls.

The support bears the weight of the entire device. Soft insulation does not become a structural base just by being placed under the chamber. Also mark the end of the insulation at the top opening to avoid leaving unprotected fibres in the handling area.

Evaluate the joints according to exposure

For the appropriate external joints, the manufacturer provides Outdoor Oven Cement. Match it to the required geometry and preparation of the parts. The method of closing the casing must take precipitation into account, and water ingress from the bottom requires a separate solution.

Before first use, carry out all the setting and drying stages according to the instructions for the applied materials. Maintain access for ash removal and chamber inspection. Document the successive layers, because after closing the casing, without these photos, it will be more difficult to distinguish between a lining problem and an insulation gap.
